How can I get dog to stop biting and tugging my sweater?

When I play with my dog he likes to play back by tugging and pulling on my sweater sleeve. How do I get him to stop that? He also likes to lick my face. Is that unhealthily and dirty? He is a Shih Tzu and is almost 7 months old. I have to tell you, this Dog answer room is the nicest room on Yahoo Answers. There is something about people who love their dogs that bring out the best in people.

  1. You need to let the little guy know that you do not want him to do that. Possibly put your hand in front of him and tell him no before he does it. It will probably take a couple of times but it will work. Good luck
  2. If you want to teach him not to pull on your clothes stop the game when he does it and tell him no. When he is playing correctly keep playing and say good boy play nice.
  3. Lmao...are we talking about the same dog room? Stop playing...remove him from your sleeve. Put him in down and stay (or something along these lines). Teach him the "off" command ....there are several things that you can do. PS... my pup likes to do that too...but he's learned to recognize when I'm not in the mood for his "play".
  4. The best thing I know is to walk away and end the play time when he starts biting. What he probably wants more than anything in world is playtime with you, and if biting ends up getting him ignored, he'll soon learn to stop in order to continue playing! He'll also likely grow out of a lot of this puppy behavior, but you do want to make sure to correct it before it becomes adult aggressive behavior. You can stop the licking the same way. A firm "No," then get up and walk away. I agree about dog owners- I think it takes a special type of person to care for other living animals- especially ones as needy as dogs! Merry Christmas!
  5. The little guy is probably wanting more exercise. Make sure he is exercised a lot. You could get a spray bottle and spray his nose (does not hurt, just surprises him) so he will think pulling on a sweater is not good. Merry Christmas you two!
  6. Puppies naturally like to tug and bite, but it is easy to give your puppy alternatives. It is not unhealthy for your puppy to lick you, but if you don't like it, you can just keep your face away from her face. You can also give her your hand lick instead and praise her for that. 7. How do you usually correct poor behavior? When he latches onto your sleeve stop the play, say No, and remove his mouth from the material. You may be playing too roughly and the only way he can meet your level is by grabbing your sleeve. Did you take him to puppy classes? That would have helped you start training him. He’s getting old enough for obedience classes. It will give you two something to do together that doesn’t involve grabbing. Face licking is a personal preference. I don’t mind getting the occasional lick, but if it’s done often or more than a couple swipes with the tongue then I would stop it. Forceful licking can be a dominant behavior. Mine, when one is snuggling up to me, may give me quick lick to my chin or jaw. It’s never to the upper part of my face, even when I’m lying flat. That would be rude behavior towards the boss and they know better.
